When properly executed, infographics can be a game-changer in digital learning. They simplify complex ideas, capture attention, and make information easy to understand. However, creating infographics that learners truly resonate with takes more than just selecting a nice template. Here are my top recommendations for creating infographics that your learners will love:

Start with your learners' needs

Before diving into design, ask yourself: What’s the single most vital piece of information learners should take away? A great infographic answers this clearly and concisely. Skip the unnecessary details and focus on what’s relevant to the learning outcomes.

Less is more

Infographics aren’t textbooks. Overloading them with text or too many elements can overwhelm learners. Stick to one central idea per infographic and use visuals to make your point clear at a glance.

Use storytelling to connect

A good infographic tells a story. Structure the content with a beginning, middle, and end—just like a narrative. Think about how the information flows and how learners will journey through it.

Choose your colours thoughtfully

Colours can make or break your design. Use a palette that aligns with your brand, but don’t overdo it. Stick to 2–4 main colours and ensure there’s enough contrast for readability.

Icons and graphics are your friends

Icons, charts, and illustrations can simplify complex ideas and draw attention to key points. But consistency is key—use visuals that match in style and tone to avoid a chaotic look.

Prioritise readability

Fancy fonts might look cool, but they can be hard to read. Choose clear, legible fonts for body text and reserve decorative fonts for headings (if at all). Don’t forget to check how it looks on different screen sizes.

Test and refine

Get feedback from real users. Are they understanding the key points? Is it visually appealing? Be open to tweaking your design based on what resonates most with your audience.

Infographics aren’t just about looking good—they’re about making learning effective and engaging. By focusing on clarity, storytelling, and your learner’s needs, you can create infographics that your learners will love, and will leave a lasting impression.
